Philips Multigroom 9000 : Standout Features
Let’s discuss the most important and standout features for the Multigroom 9000. These will elevate your grooming routine to an unmatched level!
Metallic Aesthetics
The pictures don’t do justice for the premium stainless steel housing design of this Multigroom 9000 trimmer unit.
It has a duotone aesthetic approach based on shiny silver and black. When harsh light directly reflects against the shiny portion, it congests into a rainbow-colored scroller. The sides and back are more reflective than the front.
Up top, there’s a solid rubber-reinforcement for better grip and it’s draped in black, the only other time you’ll find this color is right beneath the handle.
There’s a 30-degree arc in the blade alignment and the rest of the smaller particles in the design department have paralleled that angle.
Rubberized Grip
Seeing the shiny, metallic housing, you might be wondering whether the grip levels are alright in the Multigroom 9000.
In my opinion, this device offers the highest degree of grip levels as a trimming device can afford you.
The rubber head is textured with many parallel lines, there’s a dedicated thumb rest spot with vertical lines while the surrounding rubber consists horizontal.
Also, the power button is indented and rubberized, therefore it’ll provide grip while keeping away from accidental turn-ons.
As per the handle goes, there are tiny, textured lines encompassing every side except for the frontal area.
These textures not only help the Multigroom 9000 remain stuck to your grip in dry conditions, but also in wet trimming operations under the shower.
Superb Build Quality
If I have to say how well the Multigroom 9000 is made, it would be – SUPERB! I can’t fathom the quality of its construction using metal and thick rubber.
These rubber paddings don’t wear off very easily and should you drop the device, it’s still going to be fine unless it lands directly on the blade.
As per the blade removal mechanism goes, Philips has incorporated a new and improved method that doesn’t rely on traditional hinges.
This prolongs the lifespan of the device along with long-lasting motor, battery and self-sharpening blades, cutting down on cost in the long run.
Average Weight
Since the Norelco Multigroom 9000 is covered by metal, I was quite concerned if it’s going to weigh a lot and end up tiring my longer grooming tasks.
Well, 7.6 ounces of weight isn’t really a massive deal as it falls under the average category, but how Philips ensured this is still a mystery to me.
Such a weight class makes it ideal to carry around and use for those long and tiresome body grooming tasks.
Also, because it’s not a very lightweight tool, this certain amount of mass helps it remain steady while performing more delicate and precise trimming works.
In short, this is a highly balanced grooming tool meant to boost your confidence in every department of grooming!
6 Types of Blades Included
Philips Multigroom 9000 is versatile and it’s made easy by the swift removal of the trimmer head with one click.
There are 6 different types of heads for your every grooming necessity. Here’s a breakdown of what you’re going to receive inside the 23-in-one package:
Blade Head | Width | Purpose |
---|---|---|
Beard Trimmer | 32 mm | Ideal for long beard trimming, stubble maintenance, mustache grooming and more |
Hair Trimmer | 41 mm | Can perform bulk removal with limited efficiency, good for refined haircuts |
Body Trimmer | 34 mm | Comfortable on skin for fast body grooming, including arm and leg hair trimming |
Precision Trimmer | 9 mm | Precisely trims beard edges for producing neat looks and refining the cut |
Foil Shaver | 17 mm | For cleaning up short beard down to skin around the stubble region |
Nose Trimmer | - | Easy nose hair remover within minutes |
The beard trimmer blade is slightly narrow but not zero-overlapped, neither is the hair blade. However, the hair blade is much wider – more on that later.
In addition, the body trimmer head is a flat tool that cuts both ways as it has been a means to increase efficiency and reduce skin irritation.
In my opinion, the foil head has very limited functionality, so don’t expect a full blown beard shaving with this. At best, it can smooth out the beard area outside the beard line without having to rely on a manual razor.
Using the precision trimmer, you’ll be able to define the inner sections of your beard and mustache with no threat of accident.
Lastly, the nose trimmer is a handy tool to have. Gone are the days of struggling with a pair of scissors as the Multigroom 9000 nose trimmer head lets you complete this task in 30 seconds.
Automated Motor Technology
Philips has not disclosed the motor power for the Multigroom 9000 but it’s powerful enough based on my experience, somewhere along the lines of 5-6,000 RPM.
Also, this motor unit is endowed with the trademark BeardSense technology developed by the brand. The AI in the device boosts the motor power based on your hair density or requirement.
I’ve used this tool for both mustache trimming and beard grooming, and I could sense the power shifting into turbo mode where it found a denser hair body.
While the sound levels are fine with trimmer or clipper blades, it produces a more sharp noise with the body grooming head, so adjust your expectations accordingly.
IPX7 Waterproof Rated
Whether you want to wash the Multigroom 9000 or apply a wet trim, this device is covered by the solid IPX7 rating and a great waterproof beard trimmer.
I’ve used it on a wet beard, I took it inside the shower for a completely drenched body trim and even kept it submerged inside a pot of water.
Nothing was able to penetrate its housing, even when the blade unit was removed. The motor head can be directly rinsed, mitigating maintenance troubles.
For safekeeping, you cannot use the Multigroom 9000 while it’s connected to power solely for this reason.
Someone might run out of power mid-trim and plug it in while the device is still wet – it could’ve caused catastrophe and life-threatening accidents!
Great Battery Life
In terms of battery life, the Multigroom is a great tool to own as it can run for over 6 hours with a full charge (takes about 3 hours from zero).
Also, there’s the option for a 5-minute quick charge to squeeze out a swift stubble trim. The package comes with the charging cable but not the brick, so you’ll have to use your phone’s USB Type-A port.
There’s no battery level indicator placed on the handle, rather an LED light tells you only three things: low battery warning, charging notification and complete charge light.
From my usage, I could go on by charging the Multigroom 9000 just once a month. If you’re an infrequent groomer, one full charge might last you even two months!
All Accessories Included
It’s a dream for those requiring tons of accessories to mess around with, be that for hair grooming, beard maintenance or body hair trimming.
Let me break you down all of the guide combs and their lengths to give you a clearer idea about what to expect.
Guide Comb | Lengths |
---|---|
Adjustable 1 | 3-7 mm |
Adjustable 1 | 9-13 mm |
Adjustable 1 | 16-20 mm |
Adjustable 1 | 1-3 mm (with 0.2 mm increments) |
2 Body Combs | 3 mm, 5 mm |
Eyebrow Comb | No length mentioned |
2 Ear Combs | Left & Right Ear (no length mentioned) |
5 Hair Combs | 2 mm, 4 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm |
All of these guides are built with premium quality. All of the adjustable guide combs have a very smooth slide between length settings and they remain firmly in place once you’ve done the adjustment.
The lengths are accurate and they are able to deliver neat results, something I’ve only seen professional-grade clippers or trimmers pulling off with ease.
What I Like
- Minimal yet robust metal housing with firm grip
- Different blade heads for all grooming needs
- Technologically advanced, waterproof with long battery life
- Covers a wide array of guide combs
What Could be Better
- No travel lock
My Experience with Philips Multigroom 9000
Now that you know about all of the features that come with the Norelco Multigroom 9000 trimmer, I’ll share my experience of using it for months.
Beard Grooming Experience
The Multigroom 9000 is the most effective for beard grooming – be that long, short or medium-length beard bodies.
It caters to every hair texture and density, credit is due to the self-sharpening stainless steel blades and the BeardSense technology for regulating motor power.
I was able to not only size out my beard using the specific guide combs, blends and varied lengths had also been quite convenient.
Since the trimmer blade is not zero-overlapped, I had to utilize different methods and the precision trimmer head to land that sharp final result.
Also, neck trimming is comfortable enough to apply on versatile skin types without triggering any allergic reaction.
Overall, there was no drag or pull, and even when trimmed without any guards, no cut or irritation was experienced from my side.
Hair Clipping Efficiency
I tried different uses out of the hair trimming blade to see how far it went in terms of performance, and as expected – it felt restrictive.
You can’t expect the Multigroom 9000 clipper blade to compete against the premium hair clippers in the market when it comes to bulk hair removal or faster trims.
But where it excels is trimming your surrounding hair near the ears and at the back, up to the nape region.
Those who maintain a balding head can utilize this tool for regular maintenance, but it’s going to take longer than average and the results will not match with what you’d get out of a dedicated tool.
Body Grooming Comfort
I shaved off my entire chest hair to test out how comfortable body grooming is using the Multigroom 9000.
Just for the sake of it, I tried out the trimmer blade first on a hair growth of around 3 months. As expected, the raw blade left me scarred with red lines since I have very delicate skin.
However, the body grooming blade has proven to be very effective even on long hair! For the bulk removal, I applied it in dry mode.
Once I got the mess out of my way, I ran under the shower and kept using it until my skin reached that refined smoothness of my desire.
It takes much less time compared to other trimmers since it cuts both ways and therefore each glide removes more hair.
Also, it’s comfortable and smooth even under running water, no cuts or tugs or redness experienced – which I certainly appreciate!
Additional Trimming
The additional trimmer heads I used are the nose trimmer and precision trimmer. These two work like a charm. Let’s start with my nose.
With a clean and dried out nasal canal, it took me no more than 30 seconds to clean out everything inside without any sort of agitation.
As per the precision head goes, it’s very precise and allowed me to shape up the tight areas of my beard and even my mustache.
All of these combined, I truly believe the Multigroom 9000 is one of the most refined Norelco beard trimmers I’ve ever used!
Wet Trimming Outcome
I don’t think wet trimming the beard or the hair is a great idea for the Multigroom 9000 despite its IPX7 status.
Damp hair is often flattened and the blades fail to effectively capture all at once to give you an even trim, therefore the outcome will not be the neat result you had anticipated.
As per body hair trimming, you may use the body grooming blade on longer body hair even with shower water flowing, it tends to make things easier.
Also for hair trimming, going in dry mode is the ideal way for the same reasons. Therefore, water-resistance mostly offers value for body grooming and easy cleaning.
Cleaning & Maintenance
All thanks to the IPX7 waterproof rating, I can easily wash my Multigroom 9000 under the tap without any threat of leakage.
Cleaning takes only a few seconds. For a more thorough approach, you may use the cleaning brush provided inside the package to pull out the stray hair from the crevices.
If you look closely, you’ll see that each of the blade heads contains a dab of lubricating agent at the back, where the motor head directly connects.
It keeps the oscillation of the blades smooth and frictionless. You can apply a couple drops of lubricating agent on the motor head should these run out.
Or use any of the clipper oil alternatives to keep the operation going and extend the lifespan of these units.
How I Tested the Philips Multigroom 9000?
I’ve already mentioned through this Multigroom 9000 review that my tests were direct and personal – meaning, all the grooming was done to myself, by me.
Apart from the skin to blade tests, I stressed out the device in its water-resistance and fall damage traits.
Also, I reached out to some men I know who use the Multigroom 9000 on a regular basis to add some more perspectives from diverse hair backgrounds.
Lastly, the review sections by authentic consumers is another source of my information and all of these combined, I informed the test results at different parts of this article.
What I Like
- Simple and easy to use, can cater to beginners
- Experience on skin has been comforting and smooth
- Versatile tool that actually can cater to every grooming need
What Could be Better
- Hair trimming lacks efficiency
Who is Norelco Multigroom 9000 For?
Philips Multigroom 9000 is for those home groomers who want to invest in a singular device to take care of almost all of their grooming needs.
Also, men who travel very frequently and want to maintain a sharp look, Multigroom 9000 is certainly a great option for you, despite the lack of travel lock.
Professionals may find it interesting in the sense that they can groom different types of beards using this instrument with ease.
Lastly, it’s also a great choice for body grooming and even pubic hair shaving, but not a strong contender for these sole purposes, rather more like an all-in-one approach is the better route.
Philips Multigroom 9000 vs 7000 – A Head to Head Comparison
You might be confused like me in the beginning – the Philips Multigroom 7000 vs 9000 – they both look just the same!
Is there really any difference? Or is it just a marketing gimmick by the brand to chunk out more money out of your pocket? Let’s learn all of that in this comparison section!
Feature | Multigroom 9000 | Multigroom 7000 |
---|---|---|
Weight | 7.6 ounces | 7.6 ounces |
Housing | Metallic | Metallic |
Battery Life | 5 Hours | 5 Hours |
Waterproof | IPX7 | IPX7 |
Accessories | 22 | 22 |
There’s visually no difference between the Norelco Multigroom 7000 and 9000, and it’s often difficult for me to tell apart between these two devices.
When confused, I have to squint my eyes to make out the tiny texts at the back which read the specific model number – otherwise these two are twins – even when it comes to the weight!
Even when it comes to the performance, I felt nothing different whatsoever. Also, the two units can interchange blades or trimmer heads without a hiccup.
As per the differences, there are only 4. Let me show you what those are so that you can precisely be able to differentiate between them:
Packaging
Multigroom 9000 is by far a more travel-friendly tool due to its travel pouch design that hosts everything related to the groomer. Multigroom 7000 places everything on a plastic crevice. There’s a cloth pouch provided to carry the attachments while traveling, it’s feeble and not as convenient as the Multigroom 9000.
Body Blade
While the Multigroom 7000 offers you 4 additional trimmer heads, the body blade is missing from its arsenal. Therefore, Multigroom 9000 has extended its versatility by introducing the body blade to render it an all-encompassing grooming device.
Accessories
Multigroom 7000 belongs somewhat to the older generation in terms of accessories like the guide comb. 14 combs are individually placed and to shift from one length to another, you have to manually replace each guard. But for Multigroom 9000, there are 4 adjustable guards that let you change guard size on the fly, without any removal!
Price
While there are different purchase options for the Multigroom 7000, it’s still more affordable than the Multigroom 9000. This is a valid concern for consumers and the stark price gap will certainly help you choose one or the other.
[Note: However, there’s a 23-in-1 purchase option for the Multigroom 7000 which offers you the same travel pouch with all of the accessories you get with the Multigroom 9000, except for the body blade.]Verdict: Let me make things easier for you. If you want your Philips Norelco Multigroom to maintain your body hair among other grooming needs, Multigroom 9000 is the complete kit for that.
Otherwise, you can save tons of money by opting for the Multigroom 7000 which is figuratively the same device. With some extra payment, you can even get the same guide combs as you’d receive with Multigroom 9000 – and that would still cost you less!
FAQ
At this point of my Philips Multigroom 9000 review, I’ll answer some simple yet important questions regarding this amazing beard trimmer!
Q: Does the Philips Multigroom 9000 support corded use?
Ans: While some sources might tell you that Multigroom 9000 supports corded use, it’s not true. I own the device and I tested it myself – you CANNOT run this trimmer while connected to power for safety concerns.
Q: How long is the warranty for the Multigroom 9000?
Ans: It depends on where you’re purchasing the Multigroom 9000 from and if the warranty is still offered by the brand. Currently, if you purchase the Philips Multigroom 9000 through an official channel, it’s going to give you the extended 8-year warranty.
Q: Do I need to oil the Multigroom 9000 trimmer blades?
Ans: You don’t need to oil the Multigroom 9000 on a regular basis the way you might for a regular trimmer. But once a month, you may dab a couple drops of lubricating agent and mop up the excess to enhance the blade’s durability and performance.
Final Thoughts
I feel very pleased being able to share my journey with the Multigroom 9000 trimmer and show you how versatile and high-performing this tool really is.
The positive aspects are many while the limitations are very few. I truly believe I was able to inform you everything possible in this Philips Multigroom 9000 review article.
If you ask me if I think it’s over-priced, I’d say – NO! Because it’s a complete kit for beard, hair, body and whatnot – excelling at every department conveniently! (maybe the clipper bit leaves a bit lacking)
That said, I’d definitely recommend buying the Multigroom 9000 because I’m confident – nothing could go wrong about this unique and wonderful grooming tool!
