As a teenager, I remember how much I had to struggle with my manual razor due to all the factors that could lead to accidental cuts, nicks or tugs.
So when I was given my first electric razor, I can’t express the joy I felt at that time. However, I soon came to realize that my shaver wasn’t really user-friendly and shaving with it became another story of difficulty.

With that in mind, I’m presenting 5 electric razors beginners can rely on due to their ease of use, straightforward learning curve and great price to performance ratio!

BaBylissPRO METALFX Single and Double Foil Shavers
If you’re a newbie in the field of electric shavers, I’ll without a doubt recommend you the BaBylissPRO foil shaver from the MetalFX series.
It’s a shaver from the Barberology series and is renowned for the ease and effortlessness in generating a clean shave at every occasion.
There are two options to choose from in this handy little device. One is the single-foil shaver and the other is a double-foil system.
The single-foil BaBylissPRO shaver is very small and can fit inside your pockets like a mobile phone. While it shaves okay, the downsides are its lack of efficiency and an AA battery system.
From my tests, a single-foil shaver isn’t as effective as a double-foil unit, so I’ll discourage you from getting this more compact version, even though it sells at half the price.
My suggestion would be to settle for the double-foil BaBylissPRO shaver as I think it’s not only ideal for beginners, but also to rank among the top electric shavers at this point!
If you look into the details, you’ll find that the foil unit in this shaver hosts two foil elements in a gradient shape.
These foils are made of titanium and coated with hypoallergenic golden material. It means, a consumer who has never applied a foil shaver on skin would find utmost comfort from the start!
Springiness of these foils at that particular shape are meant for contour adaptation. You won’t have to be an expert to maneuver it around your face or even press the foils too hard against your skin.
Cutting units underneath are very sharp and manage to grab your flat lying hair efficiently with the help of the foil system I just mentioned.
You can’t really do much with a stubble growth over 3-days using this razor, so you can realize it’s a foil shaver meant to be used very regularly.
Don’t be put off by its weight! The metal casing ensures you can’t damage the housing even if you drop accidentally, which is often the case for new users.
Despite the absence of any rubbery points, the handle remains firmly attached to your grip, it’s not difficult to hold on to and it responds at your will.
The motor runs at 10,000 RPM and it tells you how powerful the engine inside the shaver is! No matter what sort of beard hair texture you have, none of it can pose a proper challenge against this BaBylissPRO shaver!
It’s a rechargeable unit and the power socket goes right underneath the shaver, next to the signal light.
This MetalFX (FoilFX02) shaver can run up to 3 hours with a full charge and trust me, it’s an extraordinary feat by a foil shaver!
Such foil shavers aren’t meant to be used in wet modes, thus it’s not waterproof. So be wary of this factor and don’t put the shaver anywhere near water.
So what are the upsides of this electric shaver? One, it’s easy to use, it cuts great, very comfortable on skin, highly portable and travel-friendly, and extremely durable.
The downside is the price tag which can be a little high for a lot of people. But trust me, once you realize its true potential, you’ll realize the FoilFX02 is worthy of the tag it’s set at!
Score: ⭐ 4.68 / 5
What I Like
- Offset double-foil system caters to new groomers
- Hypoallergenic material and powerful motor calls for efficiency
- Overall easy to charge, use, clean and store
What Could be Better
- Expensive
Braun Electric Series 3 Razor
While most of the Braun electric shavers are expensive, for instance, a professional grade Series 9 could cost an arm and a leg, the Series 3 shaver is surprisingly affordable for a wide array of consumers!
The best part of the Braun Series 3 may seem like its price, but trust me – it has much more to offer than being just an affordable electric shaver!
Starting from the design, I found it to be more alluring than the newer generations of Braun electric shavers, like the Series 7 7071.
You’ll take a liking to the housing because of its shape and color. The handle may seem wide to some people, but it’s engineered to ensure maximum grip in all conditions.
The sides are featured with blue textured rubber – essential for new users for both ergonomic value as well as high aesthetics.
Down the middle, a long and wide notch takes place to host the rubbery power button, the thumb placement area and the LED power level indicators.
This 3040s from Braun doesn’t come with a Clean & Charge station and it’s quite alright for someone who’s just starting off with their very first electric razor.
Let’s discuss a bit about the foil head. Surprisingly, there are 3 parts to the foil head – to SensoFoils on either side placing a cassette in the middle.
Even though SensoFoil is the older tech for Braun, it never fails to amaze me with its superior performance!
These foils are titanium-coated, meaning there’s no chance of triggering an allergic reaction even at the softest spots of your skin.
The floating head doesn’t tilt or rotate, rather the cutting elements are springy in order for pressure response.
You’ll have to press the shaver quite hard against your skin to get the best result out of it. But even such a high degree of pressure doesn’t harm your skin in any way.
Dry shaving methods do have their perks, I’m not going to lie, but the Series 3 shaver is actually meant for wet shaves.
Wet mode means you get to soften down your stubble, apply shaving gel or foam and generate the most comfortable shave without having to be an expert on the matter.
An easy trick is to shave inside the shower! It keeps on washing away your stray hair and keeps the beard soft and ready to be trimmed effortlessly.
As I mentioned the ergonomic points, these come into play in such scenarios. No matter you hold the Series 3 shaver, it won’t slip out of your hand even if you’re soaked in soap.
Cleaning too is quite straightforward – removing and rinsing the shaver head suffices and it’s better if you do that with lukewarm water and soap.
Braun Series 3 isn’t endowed with new technology like the modern Braun shavers and I believe it’s better for ones who are new to electric shaving.
The battery lasts for around 45 minutes, blades need replacement every 2 years or sooner if your beard texture is thick.
I’ll reiterate, ease of use is a very important factor for beginners as well as teenagers and the Series 3 shaver certainly is the perfect choice for catering to both of these consumer groups!
Score: ⭐ 4.65 / 5
What I Like
- Affordable price
- Ergonomic, water resistant housing
- Clean and comfortable outcome
What Could be Better
- None that I can think of
Andis TS-1 17235 Pro Foil Lithium Titanium Foil Shaver
Like Braun, Andis is also another popular line in the grooming industry which does not only excel at making hair clippers, but also has gifted us quality electric shavers!
My choice for the beginners and teenagers from the Andis electric razor line is the Andis ProFoil shaver.
From the name, you can realize it’s a foil shaver and in my opinion, this is a major theme throughout my article as foil units are more convenient to operate for new groomers.
The foil elements in this shaver are gold-titanium plated and covered by a hypoallergenic alloy to keep the skin safe from any negative effect.
Due to such making and outcome, I can most certainly call Andis ProFoil one of the must-have electric shavers for sensitive skin!
So if your skin itches, irritates or shows redness during or after the shaving session, the ProFoil can make its way around these troubles by offering you a comfortable shaving journey.
Apart from the foil design, the head itself tilts it two directions. That’s why gliding the shaver on your face becomes much more straightforward and demands very little effort from your side.
Also, the octagonal channels on the two foils feed hair through them more efficiently, although 3-day stubble is the limit for this shaver as well.
The motor isn’t as powerful as the one in BaBylissPRO FoilFX but it’s really close – a 9,000 RPM device ready to trim through any density of beard.
Another charming factor is its lighter weight! If the weight level and price of the BaBylissPRO shaver scare you, Andis ProFoil would be a great alternative to that!
If I must compare, I’d say that the ProFoil from Andis grants you closeness almost 90% identical to what BaBylissPRO FoilFX would offer you.
Also, due to the lack of incline in the two foil units, it’ll require a little more time to complete your shaving operation all over the face.
A major challenge is to remove hair from the corners underneath your face and your neck region.
Yes, the bi-directional tilt works for most parts but at the neck region is where you’ll start to see the limitations.
However, the weight is complemented by the 1+ hour battery life which makes the ProFoil highly maneuverable and portable.
Although the housing doesn’t seem like much, the textured-embossed grip points on the plastic handle to help to retain grip.
The power switch too contains such textures and none of it should accidentally slip or fall off of your hand.
There’s no additional fancy features included in this shaver – you need to simply charge, turn it on and use – it’s as direct as that!
So an electric shaver that’s kind on skin, very easy to carry, low price yet premium-built is a steal in my opinion.
Especially, if you have sensitive skin and have never used an electric shaver, nothing could give you a more generous experience than the Andis ProFoil shaver!
Score: ⭐ 4.65 / 5
What I Like
- Comfortable on sensitive skin
- Easy to maneuver
- Sharp blades, powerful motor
What Could be Better
- Limited contour adaptation
Manscaped The Handyman Compact Face Shaver
Imagine all of the quirkiness of the Lawn Mower 4.0 along with all the latest benefits of Manscaped encased in a nifty looking foil shaver!
That’s definitely what the brand has done with their uniquely-engineered Handyman foil electric shaver and it benefits beginners in countless possible ways!
To start off, I must stress the unmatched shaving elements which are half foil and half trimmer. It means, the limit of beard growth days is over and you can easily shave off a one-week beard at ease!
Grab the shaver and put the trimmer side first over your beard. Let it clean out the patch down to the length sufficient for the foil units to pick up on.
As per the foil element, it consists of the trademark SkinSafe technology and you’ll actually gain the most comfortable results out of it!
This is not just my assessment of the Handyman shaver. If you check out the review sections of first-hand users, you’ll know what I’m saying makes complete sense!
One thing beginners should know is that your skin often requires a break-in phase for a new foil electric shaver.
The duration is around 3 weeks if you’re a regular shaver. The Handyman from Manscaped is indeed the prime choice to allow that time since it’s a premium foil shaver in my opinion.
While the trimmer blades remove your beard efficiently, the blades underneath the foil are equally agile to craft out a smooth result.
I can’t really tell you the exact RPM of the motor but from my tests, I can reassure you that it’s quite powerful – enough to remove a dense beard off of your face.
In terms of contour adaptability, you’ll have to do most of it yourself since the shaver head is locked.
But the learning curve isn’t very steep and beginners or teenagers can comprehend the pattern with a few shaving sessions!
What allures me about this shaver is its compact size which is highly essential if you’re new to electric shaving.
This size and convenient weight opens doors for maneuverability. Also, it fits in your pocket perfectly and the magnetic cap calls for a potential travel shaver without the hassle of carrying shaving foam or gel with it.
Additionally, the one hour battery life implies there’s little need to carry the charger around at all places. Even if it’s urgent, the Type-C cable of your phone can power it back up within a very short time!
From my experience, the Handyman responds to every movement I make with my fingertips and I couldn’t be more certain about its capability of catering to beginner groomers.
Cleaning and maintenance of the Handyman is effortless to be quite frank. With an IPX7 rating, washing is also a valid option to keep things clean.
So do you think this Manscaped shaver is worth the price? I certainly think so! And I believe beginners who don’t shave regularly should find the Handyman to be their perfect match!
Score: ⭐ 4.62 / 5
What I Like
- Compact housing design
- Trimmer-foil combo for shaving longer beard
- Easy to carry and charge
What Could be Better
- Shaving neck requires a little practice
TPOB Mini Skull Foil Shaver
TPOB is just a 6-year old brand formed by barbers who understand our needs with grooming equipment. If I elaborate, TPOB stands for ‘The Pissed Off Barber’ – an attempt at humor from the creators.
However, their tiny foil shaver is indeed pleasant in many regards. The most attractive factor for the TPOB Skull series shavers is their price!
It’s one of the most affordable electric shavers in the current market. Pairing that up with the compact size and easy-to-use design increases its demand among beginners!
There are two variants you can choose from: the TPOB Skull Shaver and the TPOB Mini Skull.
The former consists of two foil units whereas the latter has a singular foil in the shaving department.
This foil is covered in golden alloy and according to TPOB, the blades are anti-allergenic and that’s what I’ve witnessed from my tests.
Also, the foil – be that singular or double – responds to pressure. But the downside is the two plastic heads holding the foil unit in place.
If you dip the shaver on your facial region, despite the pressure adjustment of the foil element, you’ll starkly sense the plastic edges and it can be unnerving at times.
On top of that, the foil isn’t very long or wide to increase your shaving efficiency. You’ll have to pick out smaller sections of your face to get things done neatly and it’ll take longer than other shavers in my list.
The holes in the foil are quite wide, enough to feed different textures of hair through for a clean shave.
I was actually impressed by the motor! It torques up at 9,000 RPM and can definitely chop off hair within the given periphery at ease!
While the Mini Skull has only one power mode, the Skull edition has two increments which you can alter between using the power knob.
Let’s talk about the shape of the housing. I don’t know if you’ll believe me – the TPOB Mini Skull is actually smaller than the Manscaped Handyman.
TPOB Skull is slightly wider but it doesn’t have the lid like the Mini Skull. You can store both of them inside your pocket and forget about its existence because of the size and weight!
Housing material is plastic with a layer of matte finish. This ensures you’ll retain grip at all times while placing your thumb over the TPOB logo.
A power light will tell you when the device is turned on or if it’s charging. You can power both of the variants up using a USB Type-C cable and use a powerbank during travel.
The battery backs up the device for over 2 hours and it takes around 30-40 minutes to fully charge up the device.
You’ll have to remove the entire head for cleaning purposes. It’s not waterproof, so you’ll have to remain patient to clean out every stray hair particle using a brush.
It’s not a very loud shaver, so there’s another win for you. The performance, comfort and portability you’ll get with the TPOB foil shaver matches perfectly with the requirements of a beginner!
I’d say the shaver gives you more than what it’s worth and it can easily be your first ever grooming tool that you can use everyday, everywhere!
Score: ⭐ 4.58 / 5
What I Like
- Low price, great performance
- Compact & ergonomic design caters to beginners
- Powerful motor & sharp blades provide smooth outcomes
What Could be Better
- Foil head is limited & costs efficiency
Why Trust My Verdict?
My journey into the world of grooming began when I was a teenager. I had to take baby steps to learn and understand how things work, which shaver would have been better for me at those early hours.
Based on that prior experience, I can attach my current expertise on the grooming tools I test, use and analyze.
The 5 products in my list went through a wide array of tests and to make the verdict objective, I consulted with other grooming experts as well as first hand users.
I’ve covered all possible angles so that your first step with a new electric shaver may provide you with the most comforting experience and as the final step, you’re reading the result of my hard and dedicated work.
Test Results: Best Electric Razors for Teens & Beginners
In this section, I’ll elaborate my side by side assessment of the best electric shavers for beginners and teenagers.
You’ll get to learn how each of them stack up against the rest in six particular qualities which I deem important to get one started off with their new grooming tool!
Level of Comfort
From the lot, the BaBylissPRO foil shaver has come out on top as the most comfortable grooming tool. The reason behind it is its uniquely designed foils, hypoallergenic coating and the powerful motor.
Only second to it is the Braun Series 3 shaver. It does indeed provide comfort while shaving, but that’s usually during a wet shave, thus it’s a little way behind the BaByliss shaver.
I’ve ranked the Andis ProFoil shaver in third spot. It’s a great shaver in general but can cause a little burning sensation for ones who have never used a foil shaver before.
Manscaped Handyman is also quite comfortable to use but the lack of pressure sensitivity in the trimmer end ranks it slightly lower than the rest.
Finally, the TPOB Mini Skull completes the list in the last spot, mostly due to the poking side plastics that hold the foil together.
Shaving Quality
In terms of shaving quality, the BaBylissPRO foil shaver and the Braun Series 3 shaver go almost as close to a manual razor.
Due to this aspect, both of the shavers are often featured in top electric shaver listings despite being priced significantly lower than the Braun or Panasonic professional shavers!
Andis ProFoil can also be a worthwhile investment if you’re okay with a miniscule amount of stubble after each shave.
Handyman fails to get as close due to a singular foil unit but it’s compensated by the trimmer end to a certain degree.
TPOB Mini Skull thus ranks below the Handyman since it has just one foil head and nothing else to back it up.
Shaver & Blade Size
TPOB Mini Skull is probably the most portable electric shaver I’ve ever used and the size is perfect for beginners to learn their way through the process.
Andis ProFoil and Manscaped Handyman are almost equally sized and weighed, therefore earning their tied spot in second.
BaBylissPRO foil shaver is quite sizable and hefty in weight, although the lid makes it easier to store and travel with.
Braun Series 3 shaver is shaped like a typical electric razor and this can take some getting used to, especially around the ergonomics and maneuverability.
Ease of Use
Andis ProFoil, Manscaped Handyman and TPOB Mini Skull are the most straightforward shavers in my top 5.
All you need is to turn the shaver on using the button or the slider, press the foil head against your skin and glide toward your beard growth.
BaBylissPRO foil shaver is a little difficult to master as opposed to the three I mentioned because of the angular foil design, shaver size and weight.
Braun Series 3 is the last one in the list as it’s the only shaver capable of wet shaving and that’s a tad bit more challenging than the rest combined.
Price Range
For the first electric shaver, price is definitely a major point of concern. It’s a field you’re not certain about, if an electric shaver is even a thing for you.
That’s why, TPOB Mini Skull is ideally priced for the experimentation and the price to performance ratio is probably better than most of the shavers in the current market.
Braun Series 3, Andis ProFoil and Manscaped Handyman are similarly priced beginner shavers and well-worth their price. It’s left up to your preference to pick between them.
Lastly, BaBylissPRO foil shaver is the most expensive one in the list. I know it’s not convincing enough but this shaver is indeed meant to last a really long time.
So if you’re someone who wants to spend around $100 and make the purchase worthwhile for the next 4-5 years, I’d suggest you go for the BaBylissPRO foil unit!
Cleaning/Maintenance
The final consideration in my assessment is how easy or difficult it is to clean out the electric shavers of the lot.
Beginners aren’t adept with cleaning or maintenance at first, so all of my shavers are mostly low-maintenance and easy to perform those obligations.
That said, BaBylissPRO foil shaver is probably the easiest to clean – dunk the stray and brush off the rest.
Braun Series 3 and Manscaped Handyman are second in the list. You can wash both of these shavers, so that makes things much easier than dry-cleaning them.
Andis ProFoil is quite straightforward to clean too, but sometimes you’ll have to dig in a little deep to get every particle out, thus the lower ranking.
TPOB Mini Skull is the most challenging to clean out in contrast as the foil head is too narrow to insert wide brushes, so you’ll just have to take your time in the process.
Best Electric Shaver for First Timers: Buyer’s Guide
Let me categorize the 5 electric shavers so that beginners can make their pick without scratching their heads too much.
I think BaBylissPRO MetalFX foil shaver ticks all of the boxes to be a completely beginner-friendly electric shaver. You may have to excuse the price if you want the absolute best.
Braun Series 3 is for those who want to take their time in shaving. For instance, prepping up the beard, applying foam, shaving in wet mode and so on, for the most comfortable, burn-free experience.
Andis ProFoil is ideal for people with sensitive skin. Its foils are adept at avoiding irritation, redness or burning sensation no matter how feeble your skin is.
If you’re someone who doesn’t shave daily or every other day, Manscaped Handyman should be your prime choice because of the trimmer head to shorten down your longer beard.
And if you’re certain that you want to pay the least to get a good starter shaver, then you have the two TPOB variants to choose from, both around the $40-$50 range.
How to Use Teen/Beginner Electric Razors?
Well, using the beginner-friendly electric shavers are straightforward affairs. All you need to do is to situate yourself beside a sink or a place which you can easily clean up after.
Once there, simply turn the shaver on and hold it against your skin firmly. Pick sections for keeping track and glide toward your growth.
When you get the hang of it, you can glide against your hair follicles but make sure that doesn’t irritate you. If it causes any allergic reaction, do not repeat that.
Check for unshaved patches with your thumb and run a couple of extra glides using the shaver.
If you’re using a waterproof shaver, you can exfoliate beforehand, apply shaving foam or gel and then glide over that. You’ll need to rinse your shaver after a few glides to keep it operational.
Even in dry mode, you’re free to apply shaving lotion to reduce friction and enhance comfort. If you manage to follow these instructions, shaving would be a piece of work for you!
Electric Shaver Maintenance for First-Time Users
Maintaining a new and easy to use electric shaver is very convenient for beginners. There are three major rules you must remember to get things right: clean, dry & lubricate.
Most beginner-friendly electric shavers aren’t waterproof, so you’ll have to go the manual way about them.
Start by removing the foil head off of the shaver and go inside with your cleaning brush. Dust off the stray particles and you’ll be good to go with the cleaning!
If you must wash, make sure your shaver can handle water. There are some shavers that don’t encourage wet shaving but suggest that the foil head can be washed.
I’d recommend against it and wash only if it’s fully waterproof. The method is simple – hold the shaver head under running water and rinse till everything is clean.
Your blades as well as motor heads must be lubricated at least once per two shaves. Apply a lubricating agent into the blade system, run the shaver for 10 seconds and then turn it off.
Same goes for the motor head if there is any. Apply a couple drops, turn the device on for a few seconds and then you can set it off.
Beginner Electric Shaver Tips & Tricks
A few additional tips and tricks to keep your new electric shaver in mint condition can go a long way! Check out my brief guide which you can apply in real time!
- Replace the Blades and Foil: If you sense any pulling or tugging, time to replace the blades and foil. The rule of thumb is to replace it once every two years.
- Charge Properly: While charging the shaver, make sure it’s fully charged. Half or quarterly charging shavers frequently can damage the battery.
- Don’t Drain the Battery: Don’t shave till your razor battery dies. This is harmful for the battery so you better check the charge level before starting to shave.
- Safe Storage: Store your shaver in a safe case that’s moisture-free and not vulnerable to damage.
- Avoid Dropping: No matter how robust your electric shaver is, dropping it every now and then is never a good idea, so handle it with care!
- Do Not Use Harsh Chemicals: It’s better to clean your electric shaver with lukewarm water and soap. Avoid harsh cleaning agents as these can remove the hypoallergenic coating or damage the electronic system in general.
If you keep these tips in mind, you won’t struggle at all as a beginner in electric shaving!
FAQ
If your beginner curiosity about electric shavers is yet to die out, check out some of the commonly asked questions answered in this section to satisfy your thirst!
Q: What should a 14 year old use to shave?
Ans: If it’s their absolute first time, they can begin with a single blade manual razor but there would still be a risk of cuts, tugs or even ingrown hair. I’d suggest going for one of the electric shavers from my list as that would be the best and most comfortable way to start their grooming journey.
Q: Is it better to shave with an electric shaver or manual razor?
Ans: You already know how I feel about it, but I’ll still try to answer both sides. Manual razors provide unmatched closeness, that bit we know. But to sacrifice safety and comfort for the miniscule difference in closeness is something I cannot accept. That’s why I’d say the perks electric shavers have outweigh the ones of manual razors as a whole
Q: How long do electric shavers last?
Ans: It really depends on which electric shaver you’ve purchased, how you’re using it, if you’re properly maintaining and storing the device. If the mentioned criteria are fulfilled and the product you own is actually a robust shaver, it can easily last you between 5 to 15 years.
Concluding Remarks
Time to conclude my discussion on the best electric shavers for beginners and teenagers. The 5 products I’ve highlighted so far are very easy to use and will pose the least amount of challenge for you.
I wish if I could travel back in time, I’d probably tell myself to get something like the BaBylissPRO foil shaver as it’s one of the most beginner-friendly shavers at present time.
If the expense feels too much to bear, alternatives like Braun Series 3 or Andis ProFoil are valid considerations too on their own accord.
Finally, I’d like to say that an electric razor for beginners shouldn’t always mean affordable. Rather it’s quite the opposite since the shaver must be comfortable yet easygoing for consumers who never owned an electric shaver!
